Dhaulagiri French Pass Trek Dhaulagiri (White Mountain), separated from the Annapurna region by Kali Gandaki Gorge (deepest in the world) includes some fifteen peaks above 7000mt. The trekking in this area is relatively strenuous and needs some mountaineering knowledge. This challenging trek takes you to spectacular wilderness areas, travelling around the entire Dhaulagiri massif and along valleys that are little travelled by locals, let alone by trekkers.

    Essential Information

Overview of the Dhaulagiri Circuit & French Pass

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most grueling and remote journeys, taking you around Mount Dhaulagiri( 8,167 m) — the world’s 7th loftiest peak. The highlight of the journey is crossing two major high passes French Pass( 5,360 m) and Dhampus Pass( 5,240 m). This route offers a raw Himalayan experience with dramatic glaciers, high- altitude camps, and jaw- dropping mountain vistas. Unlike further marketable routes similar as Annapurna or Everest, the Dhaulagiri Circuit is truly out- the- beaten- path and suitable for educated pedestrians seeking nature adventure.

    Stylish Time to Trek

    The ideal seasons are

    • Spring( March – May) Clear skies, stable rainfall, and various rhododendrons in the lower regions.
    • Afterlife( September – November) Stylish visibility, stable conditions, and comfortable temperatures at lower elevations.
    • Winter( December – February) Extremely cold and snowy above 4,500 m; crossing the passes becomes dangerous.
    • Monsoon( June – August) threat of landslides and slippery trails in the lower sections; not ideal for this journey.

    Scenic and Artistic Highlights

The journey begins in rich denes with Magar and Gurung townlets, terraced fields, and thick timbers. As you gain altitude, the trail transitions into rugged geographies of gemstone, ice, and snow. Major highlights include

    • The Italian Base Camp( 3,660 m) with its stunning view of Dhaulagiri’s south face.
    • Glacier Camp( 4,200 m) girdled by icefalls and moraines.
    • Dhaulagiri Base Camp( 4,740 m) offering up-close views of Dhaulagiri I and its neighboring peaks.
    • The crossing of French Pass, which reveals panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, and Annapurna ranges.

The closeness and dramatic mountain setting make this journey unique.

    Accommodation and Food

Unlike popular teahouse treks, much of the Dhaulagiri Circuit requires full camping support with canopies, culinarians, and janitors, especially in the advanced sections( Italian Base Camp, Glacier Camp, and further).

    • In lower townlets, you may find introductory lodges offering dal bhat, polls, and original refections.
    • Advanced up, your trekking platoon prepares refections in camps.
    • Carry snacks, energy bars, and water sanctification tablets for added comfort.

    Permits and Regulations

    You need

    • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit( ACAP)
    • TIMS( Pedestrians’ Information Management System) card

Unlike Manaslu, Dhaulagiri is n't in a defined area, so there are no defined permits, but due to the nature and specialized nature, touring with an educated companion and systematized support platoon is explosively recommended.

    Trek Difficulty and Preparation

The Dhaulagiri Circuit with French Pass is rated emphatic. It involves long touring days, steep ascents, and high- altitude camping. Major challenges include

    • Crossing French Pass and Dhampus Pass, frequently over snow and ice.
    • Extreme cold temperatures at night( below-15 °C in high camps).
    • Remote and isolated sections with no deliverance structure.

    Who's it for?
Endured pedestrians with previous high- altitudemulti-day trekking or mountaineering experience.
Preparation Cardio abidance, strength training, and high- altitude adaptation experience are essential.

    Availability and Route

    • The journey starts with a drive from Pokhara or Beni to Darbang or Marpha( depending on diary).
    • Duration 15 – 20 days depending on route and adaptation days.
    • Ends at Jomsom or Marpha with an voluntary flight/ drive back to Pokhara.
